| | DA FUNK!! | ] | Slaughterhouse-Five Critical Analysis By R. Blakely Wentley Kurt Vonnegut has always had a knack for using writing to express his creativity (or his insanity as the case may be) and Slaughterhouse-Five is no exception. Vonnegut plays around with the idea of time all throughout the book, jumping from event to event with a total disregard for chronology. This style allowed Vonnegut to make a unique novel with a strong anti-war message that is both entertaining and incredibly interesting. Vonnegut takes advantage of this style by creating a sporadic plot line, by manipulating time to serve his purpose, and by including extraterrestrials. Vonnegut chose not to limit himself with a standard chronological plotline for several reasons. His erratic plot better reflects his overall message of the horrors of war than could a plot that flows smoothly. As F. Brett Cox puts it, this random movement through time is, “…a symbol of the shock, confusion, dislocation, and desire for escape that result from the horrible experiences of war” (Cox). One moment Billy Pilgrim, our protagonist, will be in a box car capture by the Germans, the next he’ll be on an alien planet in the zoo and the next he’ll be at his daughter’s wedding. These events don’t fit together, but neither do the goings-on in war, and that’s Vonnegut’s point. Vonnegut’s method of writing also opens up many opportunities to draw attention to his message by creating a creative way to set up contrasts and juxtapositions that otherwise would be impossible for the author. For example, Vonnegut would have Billy Pilgrim’s father-in-law sing “humorous” songs about Polish people and the next moment Billy would be seeing a Pole hanged to death in public (Vonnegut 155). This contrast of imagery shows the grisly reality that is war better than just telling about a public hanging would and it’s only through Vonnegut’s style that this is possible. Vonnegut doesn’t only show us time in forward moving chunks. He also manipulates time by having some things go backwards. One of the strongest anti-war messages he makes is when he shows Billy Pilgrim watching a war movie backwards: “Over France, a few German fighter planes flew at them backwards, sucked bullets and shell fragments from some of the planes and crewmen…some of the bombers were in bad repair…German fighters came up again, made everything and everybody as good as new” (Vonnegut 74). When one looks at war backwards, people aren’t killing people, they’re helping each other. After all of the bombs are sucked back into the bombers, the bombs are sent back to America and disassembled, and then: “The minerals were then shipped to specialists in remote areas. It was their business to put them into the ground, to hide them cleverly, so they would never hurt anybody ever again” (Vonnegut 75). Without Vonnegut experimenting with time, he would never have been able to put this profound observation of war into his novel. Although his style really helps to bring out his message, it would be utterly impossible with out the help of his little green friends the Tralfamadorians. It’s safe to assume that human beings were Vonnegut’s target audience which creates a little problem with the way this story was written. Human beings are only capable of perceiving the world in three dimensions and the concept of time as a dimension is literally impossible for the human brain to comprehend. Having the main character be ‘unstuck’ in time and thus liable to be anywhen at anytime makes it difficult for the reader to follow all of the time. The Tralfamadorians do their best to help Billy Pilgrim understand his situations; the same situation that governs what the reader sees and when they see it. The Tralfamadorians explain to Billy that they can see, “…all time as you might see a stretch of the Rocky Mountains. All time is all time. It does not change. It does not lend itself to warnings or explanations. It simply is” (Vonnegut 85-86). They also tell Billy what they think about wars. They say, “…we have wars as horrible as any you’ve ever seen or read about. There isn’t anything we can do about them, so we simply don’t look at them” (117). The beings that can see every war that ever happened and every war that ever will happen, all happening at the same time choose to ignore all those wars for the simple reason that there are so many things in life that are better than war. Without the Tralfamadorians this book might be lost among the masses and its message with it. Vonnegut was able to turn such a horrible catastrophe as the Dresden firebombing into a strong anti-war message that is just as powerful today as it was when it was written. Vonnegut pulls you in with an erratic plot line, keeps you entertained with his disregard to the laws of physics as we know them and sends you home with the knowledge imparted onto you by little green men. His novel has remained humorous and relevant for almost 30 years and it’s safe to say that it will for years to come.

| | Mad World- T4F | ] | I didn't die, by the way. Just I used to have dreams where I would die and they were so warm and I loved them. Mad world much? Like one where I got shot in the back...a lot. I want to say 9 times, but I'm not 50 Cent. Where each bullet went in was just warm and I could feel each one in my back. I even stopped breathing. I woke up shortly thereafter. Another time, I got bitten my a snake and I could feel each fang go into my hand. The same warm feeling I had already experienced. Just pointing out that Tears for Fears is right and that the dreams in which you die probably will be the best you've ever had. Caitlan told me to clarify. |

| | Feels so Good- Chuck Mangione | ] | Imminent Death Syndrome By Rober† Wentley The clock reads 2:30. Benjamin pokes his head above the wall of his cubicle. He looks across the room of identical cubicles filled with his busy coworkers. He pays no mind to them. Benjamin wants to get out this hell and get home to his wife. Today is Benjamin’s anniversary. Today is his 10th anniversary to be precise, which is all the more reason to duck out of work early. He tidies his desk up rather haphazardly and tells his computer to shut down. Benjamin decides he doesn’t want to wait for his computer to end its tasks, so he holds down the power button to speed things along. None of the work Benjamin did today has been saved, but that really won’t matter tomorrow. Benjamin walks faster than Benjamin would on any average day toward the elevator. Ding. Going down. But Benjamin decides that he is in too good a mood to be cramped up in the elevator and decides to take the stairs. There is nobody in the stairwell but Benjamin. He jumps down the steps 2 at a time, and sometimes he slides down the railing. He reaches the bottom and before opening the door to the lobby, he runs his fingers through his hair to conceal his juvenile behavior in the stairwell. Benjamin reassures himself that everybody who works in that building has slid down those rails at least once. He isn’t really embarrassed about what he had just done but thinking he isn’t the only one, is always comforting to him. The clock reads 2:33 while Benjamin leaves his drab office building. Benjamin doesn’t see the need to own a car in the big city. Usually, Benjamin walks home but today he is in a hurry. Benjamin hails a cab. To the 5th street florist and step on it. The cabbie doesn’t step on it. In fact, he goes a lot slower than one should go on such a busy street. Benjamin is now flustered, and he exits the cab while it is stopped at an intersection. Benjamin doesn’t pay the cabbie, but that won’t matter tomorrow. The clock reads 2:36 when Benjamin is out of the cab. The florist is a block down from where Benjamin is and Benjamin goes that block on his feet. It is a little flower shop. It is green and there is a basket with brown prickly grass in it. The window has many bouquets of beautifully arranged flowers and small teal neon sign that flashes “Open” to no set rhythm. Benjamin’s wife’s name is Dahlia. He spends a little while browsing the flowers, but he knows exactly what he is going to get her; 2 dozen red dahlias. Benjamin over tips the florist by about 200%, but that won’t matter tomorrow. Benjamin leaves the florist with his flowers in hand, humming the song that was played at his wedding. Last year on his anniversary he danced with his wife in the living room to that song, and he hasn’t been happier since that moment. Benjamin’s apartment building is in sight from the florist. His wife took the day off, so he knows that she is there right now waiting for him. Benjamin decides that he’s a bit too disgusting from the workout he had in the stairwell, and he decides to stop at the convenience store that he gets the newspaper from every morning to freshen up. Benjamin opens up the door to the convenience store. BANG. This is odd. That is not supposed to be a bang. That should be a happy little ding. Benjamin is staring face to face with a man with a burlap sack the size of a honeydew melon. The man is holding a .9mm. Benjamin looks down at his Red flowers and sees a much deeper hue of red. The man pushes Benjamin out of the way, out cold on the sidewalk in the front of the store. Benjamin smells his flowers and thinks of his wife. “Should have taken the elevator” he says. The clock reads 2:40. |

| | Warrior- Yeah Yeah Yeahs | ] | My keyboard is still malfunctioning. Hence why I never update anymore.
I quit Final Fantasy XI because I realized that I liked the people more than I liked the game play, which in retrospect was a bad idea. I started playing Phantasy Star Universe, and all it is is repetitive hacking and slashing... and it takes for ever to level up unlike the old game. I also got Tiger Woods '07 hoping to rule that game as much as I did '05. They made the putting system so hard that you can't even sink a 4 ft putt. Also they made the regular shots so unforgiving, its just too frustrating to be fun.
Also Caitlan doesn't know anything. If I ask her something, she just says, "I don't know." If I ask her anything at all, even something as simple as what do you like to do? And to make things worse, I bet in response to this she will make up an excuse for why she does this instead of fixing it. But because I said something about it, she probably won't. And because I said that she will!! And so on and so forth. Psychology is so much fun. (I would prefer she do something about it.) |

This is the first thing that has made me happy in a long while (not including caitlan, the happiness she gives me is only there when i'm with her or talking to her on the phone.) After I lost all my friends, i had to rely more and more on my online friends. Then two of my best friends Keeba and Ironguy were fixin to quit. Then i realize they were the last of my good friends on this game. Then i talked to them last night and they said they were quitting to play PSU. Then they talked about it for a while. Seemed interesting. Seemed like it needed to be a part of the next chapter of my life. Then i didnt feel so bad about spending (read, wasting) 47 days of my life with this game. 47 days over the course of 10 months. i havent talked to caitlan today but i'm still happy. this is a good thing. i cant wait to see her tonight. |

Caitlan says: No, if it isn't important enought for you to remember, then I'll just stop caring
That made me feel like shit. I'm a bad boyfriend. Caitlan needs to break up with me now. |
